In the worlds of triathlon and running, Sunday is usually the designated Long Run Day.  Since it’s the off season and I’m not going to be doing any long running today, I hit the Leucadia Farmer’s Market instead.   I don’t think that I’d been since February.  I really enjoy the connection that people seem to have with community and food at farmers’ markets.  For that reason, conceptually, I love them.  However, I do feel that some of them have morphed into more of a street fair atmosphere, chock full of prepared foods and crafts, than an actual market of collective farms where things that are raised and grown on a farm are sold.  Case in point was the farmers’ market that I visited in Las Vegas:  There were jewelery vendors, Tupperware hawkers, a Kettle Korn popper and one lone produce stall all the way from Bakersfield.  Weird.

Leucadia farmers’ market has got it going on.  I bought 5 for 5$ organic Haas avocados; a giant container of organic pomegranate seeds (5$); discovered a new tomato called “Indigo Rose” at the Suzie’s farm stall; marveled over raw almonds and Medjool dates; and made note of the last-of-the-season melons and tomatoes coexisting with the first-of-the-season pumpkins and squashes. This is a great time of year for a foodie.  One of my favorite vendors was also there.

I was so glad to see that a company which I’ve followed since its inception is expanding with new products. I love it when yet another local company makes “P.W.I’s” (Products With Integrity).  Not only did they have their organic, almond-based dipping sauce line; they have also delved into the world of energy bars.  The flagship bar is a simple mixture of Dates, Coconuts, Pepitas, Flax and Sea Salt. They are also making a Pumpkin Spice flavor, which has a slightly different mix of Dates, Almonds, Pecans, Oats, Hemp, Maple Syrup and Spice.  Yeah, they’re THAT good.

So good, in fact, that I probably will be stocking up on them for my long workouts and tote-about snacks. The bars are nutrient-dense products made from a perfect balance of superfoods.  I’m seriously considering putting together a whole foods-centric tri team.  Wouldn’t that be cool to see  “Mmmm….Bitchin’  across the back of a pair bike shorts?  Please check out this North County company, Bitchin, Inc.

I had already taken a couple of bites out of this one. Yep, it’s really good!

I am almost 2 weeks out from my Achilles treatment.  Yesterday, I got a little worried, as there was some stiffness (particularly when I would go down the stairs).  I guess that I was more than a “little worried” because, at 3:00 a.m. (I’m up at 3:00 a.m., WTF?), I signed on to UNIVERSITY OF GOOGLE.  For the next hour and a half, I read anything and everything that I could find about what to expect during post PRP treatment.  All of the articles basically said the same thing:

  1. Post PRP, you can expect a little bit of a rollercoaster ride. Meaning that you might feel great one day and hurt the next. This is normal in the healing process.
  2. The platelets are active for six weeks and it can take up to six months for normal collagen to form and heal.

 

This morning, I barely felt anything when going down the stairs.  Which validates my theory that if something is posted on the internet, it must be true.

Triathlon training weekly wrap up:

  • Swim: 2 indy swim workouts; 1:35 hours 5000 yards
  • Bike: 4 EZ rides between 1-1:45 hours; 5.5 hours and 96 miles
  • Strength/Core: 3 Core 40 Classes 2 hours
  • Stretch Cords: Upper body 2 sessions 20 minutes
