It’s been a great first half of March.  I was able to kick off the first weekend with an Olympic-ish distance race + post race quality time in Palm Desert with my parents and Geoff. For me, the race served two main purposes:  to shake out the proverbial cobwebs (I haven’t raced since June of last year) and to serve as a litmus test to gage my running progression over the last two months.   I shelved the racing flats and stocked the Hokas in transition. Result?  AG win and only 3 seconds off my run split the from two years–go marshmallow shoes–I’ll take it.

Throwback:   My Tiguan came with a short subscription to Sirius.  Driving to Palm Desert, I heard this:  LOL

Hello 1997–hadn’t heard you in a decade +

We spent a couple of extra days in Palm Desert and did a day at the spa at the JW Marriott.  I convinced them that a date shake CAN be made VEGAN.  It was so good that I’ve been recreating it at home.  I have a “love-love” relationship with dates-especially the fat, soft, pillow-y Medjool type.   Like raisins (thank you Carl, learned about this last week), they have an alkalizing effect on your body.  I often eat them in training and used them for fuel on the bike last year at IMWhistler.  They are caramel-sweet in flavor and very versatile.  In cooking, I’ve incorporated them into everything from plant-based vinaigrette to chili to lemon curd.   A couple of notes for this recipe: The best way to keep a supply of frozen bananas on hand is to let them ripen fully on your counter.  When brown spots start to appear, de-sheath (is that a word?) or PEEL bananas and break up into 4-5 pieces. Freeze.  Don’t freeze bananas in the peels as you will end up with a liquid banana mess when they defrost. I keep about a bunch ahead so that I always have a supply.  Secondly, I’m a huge fan of making shakes and smoothies green with a couple handfuls of spinach, so don’t hesitate to throw some into the mix. Wheatgrass powder is also a good addition but it lacks the neutral flavor that spinach has. Coconut Butter is a great way to add extra creaminess.
Date Shake

  • 1 Cup Alternative Milk
  • 1 frozen Banana
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon
  • 4 Medjool Dates, pitted
  • 1/8th (pinch) Sea Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Ice
  • Options: 1-2 handfuls of spinach; 1 tsp wheatgrass powder; 1 Tbsp Chia or Hemp seeds, 1 Tbsp Coconut Butter

  • Combine all ingredients in high-speed blender.  Enjoy!
